Pamela Bentien

Albany Chapter Leader since 2015

I began as a fill-in leader to help out a few years ago and then began to sign up officially around 2015.  I am also Paddling Co-Chair, so I mostly lead canoe & kayak outings. As the owner of an Old Town Otter I am a de facto leader for the slower group of paddlers.  I began going out with the paddlers in the Spring of 2002, a few months after buying the kayak.  Over time I gained skills and confidence so was able to assist other leaders when called on during outings.  It only seemed fair to take a turn leading to evenly distribute the responsibility throughout the season. I particularly appreciate the ADK emphasis on safety and camaraderie while maintaining a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy the outing.  I hope to share that with more people who may be new to paddling or who have kept going out on a back burner because of lack of companionship.

Typical Outings: Paddling
Favorite Season for Outings: I enjoy all seasons but lead paddles from April through October at all our launch sites.
Favorite Place for Outings:  I like some sites better than others but usually my favorite is the one I’m at.
Experience/Education/Certifications: I participate in the ADK paddle leader training and will continue to build on my skills.

Mike Brun

Previously Schenectady Chapter leader

I enjoy a number of outdoor activities: cross-country skiing, hiking, flat and white-water canoeing and trail work. I am retired, which is great in that I can go when the conditions are good and not have to wait for a weekend. I am a level 1 leader.

Typical Outings: Cross country skiing, occasional hiking
Typical Difficulty: Moderate, up to 10 mile hiking, 12 mile skiing
Favorite Season for Outings: winter, fall
Favorite Place for Outings: Avalanche Lake and many others

Roger Green

New Chapter leader in 2025

I love being in the mountains. Many people helped me when I was inexperienced and I am now paying it forward by helping and encouraging beginner, intermediate and slower hikers develop their skills and reach their goals.

Typical Outings: Hiking and Snowshoeing at a relaxed to moderate pace
Typical Difficulty: C+ to B+
Favorite Season for Outings: Winter
Favorite Place for Outings: Catskills and Adirondacks
Experience/Education/Certifications: Catskill 3500 + Winter 3500, Adirondack 46, currently leading hikes for 3500 club, Overlook Fire Tower Steward

Bob Hoffman

Schenectady Chapter leader for 3 years

Retired in 2023 and now have time to share the love of hiking & climbing and introduce new folks to the beauty and fitness benefits of exploring on foot.

Typical Outings: Hiking & snowshoeing
Typical Difficulty: C rated Leader, but try to stay fit enough to do B’s & A’s when the opportunity arises.
Favorite Season for Outings: Fall & Winter display the ultimate beauty of the mountains, while spring & summer provide more challenges, with mud, bugs and heat. Love them all!
Favorite Place for Outings: The Adirondacks and Catskills are special, but all of the Northeast is spectacular. Maine is a favorite and New Hampshire has so many places to climb.
Experience/Education/Certifications: Finished the 46 with my wife and sons in 1993, and have continued to hike all over the NE (need a few more for the NE115). An unashamed peakbagger – show me a list and I’m off for the challenge. I am a 46er Trailhead Steward and enjoy helping “newbies” find the activity best suited for them. Between hikes, I walk, golf, disc golf and maximize my time with my wife, sons & daughters in law, our grandchildren and extended family.

Leore Kushner

Albany-Schenectady Chapter leader since 2025; Co-chair trail maintenance

I love spending time in the Adirondacks and Catskills, whether leading hikes, exploring new trails, or just getting out for a few hours to clear my head. I believe the outdoors can feel welcoming to everyone and that a good hike can be both peaceful and energizing.

When I’m not hiking, you’ll probably find me skiing, playing disc golf, gardening, cooking, or tending to a few bonsai. I also like to draw and experiment with essential oils. I work in the playground industry and enjoy encouraging people of all ages to play and have fun.

Typical Outings: Day hikes in the Adirondacks and Catskills, sometimes long or overnight trips
Typical Difficulty: Beginner-friendly to 20-mile challenge days, depending on my mood and travel companions
Favorite Season for Outings: Autumn and winter — the perfect mix of color, quiet, and crisp air
Favorite Place for Outings: High Peaks Wilderness and the Catskills
Experience/Education/Certifications: ADK Trail Steward, ADK/DEC leader training

Norm Labbe

I have been a whitewater paddler for over 25 years. I enjoy sharing the adventure of whitewater in the Adirondacks and other areas in and out of New York state.

Typical Outings: Whitewater paddling
Typical Difficulty: Class 2 to 4 whitewater
Favorite Season for Outings: Spring
Favorite Place for Outings: Catskill Creek

Robb Lewis

New Chapter leader in 2025

I’ve been leading hikes and backpacking treks for decades, but with ADK since 2025.  I love the difficult hikes that go deep into the interior, but I also love the easier hikes.  Overall though, my goal is to educate.  I’m always willing to teach trail ethics, Leave No Trace, map and compass, basic first aid, etc.

Typical Outings: Hiking
Typical Difficulty: B or higher
Experience/Education/Certifications: Winter, but hike all seasons
Favorite Place for Outings: Adirondacks, but go astray into the Catskills
Experience/Education/Certifications: ADK 46er, Catskill 3500, Level 3 guide for ADK, LNT level 1 instructor, and EMT

Danielle Lindblad

I’m always happy to get out and share my love of the mountains and nature with others.  I’ve had a lot of great experiences and met a lot of wonderful people on the trails, so introducing new people to some of my favorite places is always a treat.  Nothing beats a full day outdoors!

Typical Outings: Hiking, snowshoeing
Typical Difficulty: A/A+
Favorite Season for Outings: Fall and Winter
Favorite Place for Outings: Adirondacks

Keith Martin

If it’s outdoors count me in! On backcountry x-skis in winter, hiking or paddling in other seasons.  I’ve enjoyed many group adventures throughout NY, the eastern US, Rockies, Cascades, and internationally; pieced together long stretches of the AT; completed the Northville Placid Trail, the Cranberry Lake 50 and the Firetower Challenge.  I’ve bicycled extensively on roads and highways throughout the Adirondacks, and recently biked with friends around Lake Champlain from Whitehall to Fort Chambly, Que. and back.

Typical Outings: Hiking, Trekking, Skiing, and Bicycling. I’d like to get back into some Flat Water overnight paddling Trips too.
Typical Difficulty: Hikes C+ to A+; Bicycling B to A
Favorite Season for Outings: Year-round! We live in a great four season locale!
Favorite Place for Outings: Primarily Adirondacks and Catskills. Occasionally Appalachian Trail (AT) in NY, CT, MA, VT, NH and ME.

Kathy Rzant

Albany Chapter Leader for a few years

My favorite hike is what we’ve been calling a “Swike,” a hike up a mountain followed by a refreshing swim in a lake on our descent.  I lead C+ and B hikes, mostly in the Adirondacks and mostly in the summer.   It’s great fun to meet hikers and discover we’re from the same tribe.

Typical Outings: Hiking
Typical Difficulty: B & C
Favorite Place for Outings: Adirondacks and Albany area
Experience/Education/Certifications: Wilderness First Aid

Alison Saville Zoske

Albany Chapter Leader for about 10 years

I am Paddle Chair for our Albany Chapter and I lead paddles in the Capital District as well as in the Adirondacks. Our Chapter offers a  paddle outing every Tuesday night, and I generally am out paddling three times a week, May through October.  I also enjoy wilderness camping and paddling and love to spend three or four overnights on an Adirondack lake or river.  My husband, Joe, and I lead a couple of bicycle outings each year also.  We tend to do 15-20 mile bike trips in the Capital District, nothing too strenuous.  In addition, we like to do walks and easy hikes, but are not A hikers.

Typical Outings: Paddling, biking
Favorite Place for Outings: Adirondacks

Brad Schwebler

Albany Chapter Leader Since 2018

I decided to lead hikes because I wanted to share the beauty and wonders of the Shawangunks which I had become very familiar with. My hikes are generally slower paced to enjoy and photograph flora and fauna, rocks, trees, fungi, and waterfalls. The hikes are moderate in difficulty and length and sometimes include rock scrambles. I am also interested in exploring other areas I have not been to in the Catskills, Taconics, Berkshires, Adirondacks, and elsewhere.

Typical Outings: Hiking
Typical Difficulty: C, C+ and B
Favorite Season for Outings: Spring for the waterfalls, Summer for the flora and fauna, Fall for the fall
foliage, Winter for snowshoeing and skiing.
Favorite Place for Outings: Shawangunks, Catskills, and Adirondacks
Experience/Education/Certifications: I am a former Boy Scout, a retired USAF Medical
Service Specialist and retired NYANG Aeromedical Service Specialist. I was formerly certified
as an EMT. I attended and completed an ADK first aid class and an ADK wilderness survival
class.

Virginia Boyle Traver

I have led outings all year ’round for our Chapter since 2006.

I love to lead outings because I, selfishly, want to go to my favorite places!  Scheduling with ADK assures that I actually get there. I have met fabulous people on my outings as well, many of whom have become lifelong friends.

Typical Outings: Hiking, snowshoeing, x-country skiing
Typical Difficulty: C+
Favorite Place for Outings: Most often my trips are in the Adirondacks or the Berkshires
Experience/Education/Certifications: I have been a trip leader for ADK since 2006 and was the Albany Chapter Outings Chair from 2007-2023.  I remain on the Executive Committee as a Member at Large.  I am currently certified to lead Level 1 outings.  I am an Adirondack 46er, and try to get out as often as I can to hike, ski, and snowshoe.

Debbie Van Ryn

Hike leader for 1 year; Albany-Schenectady Chapter Outings Chair

I recently moved back to the Capital Region after several decades away and am enjoying
exploring and re-exploring wildlands both within the region and N, S, E and W of us! I became a
hike leader this year to give back for all the wonderful hikes others have led me on.

I lead moderate pace B level hikes much of the year and C level local hikes in winter.

Typical Outings: Hiking
Typical Difficulty: B
Favorite Season for Outings: Year-round
Favorite Place for Outings: Most often my trips are within an hour and a half drive – southern Adirondacks, northern Catskills, Berkshires or local preserves.

Richard and Karen Wang

Trip leaders for the Schenectady and Cold River Chapters of the ADK for the last 10 or 15 years.

Since we enjoy checking out new trails and places to paddle and bike, we like to share our “finds” with other like-minded people.

Typical Outings: Hikes, paddles, bikes
Typical Difficulty: We lead relatively easy outings (level C or C+)
Favorite Season for Outings: Year-round
Favorite Place for Outings: During the warmer months we prefer to lead outings in the eastern or central Adirondacks and in the colder months we lead outings  closer to the Capital District, especially in Saratoga County.
